  5. Essential questions are concepts in the form of a question. • Essential questions organize and set the focus • These essential questions will set the order for your paragraphs in your paper Essential Questions

  6. Why should students be allowed to have laptops in school? • What are the pros of having a laptop? • What are the cons of having a laptop? • How much would it cost a school district? Essential Questions

  7. How did I get those? • 1. First I will pull out questions that relate to the 5 W’s. • 2. Then I am going to narrow the list down to three of four. • 3. Finally, I am going to put them in an order that will make sense in my paper. • 4. Once I am finished with my essential questions, I am going to come up with some search terms for each question. Essential Questions

  8. Topic: Spiders • Research Question: How and why do scientist study the conservation of spider habitats? I do…

  9. The first thing that I am going to do is think about my 5 W’s. • So who… • Who are the scientists that study spider habitats? • This is the only question that I can come up with for who so I am going to move on. How and why do scientist study the conservation of spider habitats?

  10. Now the what… • What are spider habitats? • What are the benefits of conserving habitats? • What are the disadvantages of conserving habitats? • What are methods scientists use to study spider habitats? • Now the when… • I don’t really have a when in my question so I am going to skip this one. How and why do scientist study the conservation of spider habitats?

  11. Now the where… • I can’t come up with a where in my research question either… • Why… • Why do scientists study the conservation of spider habitats? How and why do scientist study the conservation of spider habitats?

  12. Now I am going to go back to the questions that I have written and pick out the ones that make the most sense. • Who are the scientists who study spider habitats? • What are spider habitats? • What are the benefits of conserving habitats? • What are the disadvantages of conserving habitats? • What are some methods scientist use to study spider habitats? • Why do scientists study the conservation of spider habitats? How and why do scientist study the conservation of spider habitats?

  13. Next I am going to narrow down my questions. • I know that six questions is too many. I am only going to be writing a three page paper on this so I am going to limit my essential questions to three or four. How and why do scientist study the conservation of spider habitats?

  14. Who are the scientists who study spider habitats? • What are spider habitats? • What are some methods scientist use to study spider habitats? • Why do scientists study the conservation of spider habitats? How and why do scientist study the conservation of spider habitats?

  15. As I am looking at these questions I think that I can take one more out…I’m not sure I need to have a whole paragraph/section dedicated to who scientists who study spider are. I think that I can include that information quickly in another paragraph or section. So, I am going to take that question out. How and why do scientist study the conservation of spider habitats?

  16. The next step is to put them into an order that will make sense in my paper. • I know that I need some background information on what spider habitats are so I think I will put that one first. • Next, I think I need to put in there why scientists study spider habitats. • Finally, I will add in my paper some ways scientist study spider habitats. How and why do scientist study the conservation of spider habitats?

  17. This is what I came up with for order… • What are spider habitats? • Why do scientists study the conservation of spider habitats? • What are some methods scientist use to study spider habitats? How and why do scientist study the conservation of spider habitats?

  18. Now, I know that this is changeable…just because I put these questions in this order now does not mean that I can’t change it later. This just gives me a better idea for when I start drafting my paper later on. How and why do scientist study the conservation of spider habitats?

  19. Step one: Decide credibility of sources. • Step two: Read the WHOLE article • Step three: Highlight information based on essential questions • Assign each essential question a highlighter color • Highlight information in your article with the color that corresponds to the essential question it answers Note taking
