Slang, Dialect, and Standard English What is the difference???
Standard English • A controversial term for a form of the English language that is written and spoken by educated users. • Why might it be controversial? • Why is it important? • How is “centre” and “center” or “theatre” and “theater” different?
Dialect • A regional or social variety of a language distinguished by pronunciation, grammar, or vocabulary, especially a way of speaking that differs from the standard variety of the language. • This is a regional quality. • How do we speak differently from other areas of the United States? • How do we speak differently from other areas of the world?
Slang • An informal nonstandard variety of speech characterized by newly coined and rapidly changing words and phrases. • This is a type of speaking that changes from generation to generation!!!
Your turn!! • As a group, we are going to create a slang vs. dialect vs. standard English poster!!!! • I want each of you to come up with one example of slang (school appropriate) and one example of dialect!! It can be modern or old school!!!
How this relates… • In Freak the Mighty, for Kevin (Freak), language plays a tremendous role in his life. Think about, as we listen and read the story, why that might be important. How does it impact how other people view him?
