  1. Early Career Faculty PanelCRA Mentoring Workshop Dan Grossman, Kim Hazelwood, Chad Jenkins February 22, 2010

  2. A semi-structured plan • Who we are • Just 3 of many people within +/- 1 year of tenure decision • Varied background, interests, lives, departments • Some caveats • 3ish minutes of prepared tidbits in many areas of advice • Lots of time for questions • Or just “please talk more about topic X” CRA Mentoring: Grossman, Hazelwood, Jenkins

  3. Who we are [hint: you should be able to give a 30-second intro at any moment without slides  ] CRA Mentoring: Grossman, Hazelwood, Jenkins

  4. Grains of salt • There are very few absolutes • We don’t agree on every last detail • Just follow “most of the advice most of the time” • And it takes a year or two to “ramp up” • Different people need to hear different advice • Example: Spend more [less] time on X [Y] • All things in moderation, including moderation • Most advice is about moderation but successful people are extremists about something (not everything) • Every situation is different CRA Mentoring: Grossman, Hazelwood, Jenkins

  5. Topics Our chance to riff briefly on things that were entire sessions already • Teaching • Service • Working with students • Research • Work/life • Travel & visibility • Funding • Being mentored • Advice on getting advice • Tenure != everything CRA Mentoring: Grossman, Hazelwood, Jenkins
