The Fermilab Test Beam Facility* is extremely popular and will remain so for the foreseeable future. • Having multiple users running simultaneously is a common occurrence. • We are now booking experiments in August • We need a second beamline soon! • * (The FTBF facility, along with the MINOS Underground Lab, is managed by Aria Soha)

The Plan • We proposed to DOE that we would create a second test beam line in the MC7 enclosure, using MCenter beam. • The operational characteristics of the MCenter beamline are very similar to the MTest beamline, since the latter was based on the former. The MCenter beamline does not have the low energy supplies that MTest has for low energy (<5 GeV) tuning • This plan was approved by DOE a year and a half ago and we received $190K in funding for reestablishment and upgrades to the beam, creation of a user area and upgrades to the ‘Jolly Green Giant’ (the spectrometer magnet in MC7). • The beam would be identical to that used by MIPP, in the same location, so Shielding and Safety Assessments should be relatively easy. • We should make this test beam operational by summer, 2011, so that it can support any user requests for that time.

  10. JGG Operations • Making the Jolly Green Giant operational is important for the facility • We already have one request for a test in a magnetic field • Need to verify water cooling, power delivery, and then map with Zip Tracker

Tasks Needed for Completion (in order of priority) • Finalize shielding plan and install concrete as needed • Finalize issues of MTest/MCenter beam split – Is F3 quad o.k.? • Perform full Shielding and Safety Assessment • Test power supplies • Move old magnets out of MWest alcove • Build electronics room in MW7  • Build covered walkway • Finish user area • Finish commissioning of JGG, including field measurement We hope to be ready for beam by this summer, but need significant help from External Beams and AD Radiation Safety groups. Beam can be delivered usefully at this point

  13. A Longer View of Test Beam in MCenter • Use MIPP apparatus to create a tagged neutron facility. • Import a large bore solenoid for TPC tests (the TWIST magnet from TRIUMF is a possibility) • Use the MCenter spectrometer to simulate jet physics for advanced calorimetry.
