  5. Certification The process through which an organization grants recognition to an individual (or organization) that meets certain criteria • Not the same as licensure • Requested/required by employers • State laws vary • Determines competency

  6. Certification in CTE • Program evaluation tool: use as end-of-pathway assessment • Validates students work-ready status • Provides opportunities for employment • Student outcome data

  8. Answer: 80% According to the Institute for a Competitive Workforce, only 40% of the jobs requiring certification also require a four-year college degree. Every student should be prepared to thrive post-graduation, CTE helps students plan ahead.

  9. Provisional Certification An applicant who is scheduled to graduate from an accredited high school or GED program may receive a provisional certification under the policy outlined below: • Candidates must take and successfully pass the examination no more than 12 months prior to graduation. At the 12 month mark, proof of graduation (high school diploma or GED) must be provided to apply for full certification • Once the provisional certification is converted to a full certification, the expiration date will follow the initial testing date and all requirements for continuing competency to renew the certification will be required. A provisional certification issued by the NHA will be clearly marked with a provisional watermark. Provisionally-certified candidates will have a “P” associated with their certification number and can be verified as such through the NHA candidate verification system .

How do we offer those NHA certifications? • Estimate number of students early in the school year • Utilize Perkins IV funding • NHA will provide internal support to ensure student success • Teachers may also become certified through the NHA – WV Grant Funds may be available • Additional step-by-step directions to follow

  11. If Certification isn’t mandatory, why should my students do it? • End-of-pathway assessment for “career ready” students • Proves level of knowledge and competency • Improves student confidence • Enhances resume • May result in higher pay and career advancement

  12. Why should I certify my students? • Creates internal consistency among CTE programs • Provides opportunities post-graduation • Mitigates risk for employers • Increased student placement rates • Positive student outcome data for Perkins IV and other federal funding sources

How is NHA different from other industry certification providers? • Partner to ensure student success • Provide faculty training and support • Provide aggregate reports for student outcome data • Students become nationally certified before graduation • Online, paper/pencil testing or PSI testing • Students receive certifications in 3-5 business days • Employer relations team • Dedicated Healthcare Education Consultants and Account Management team for technical support

  22. NHA Certification Exams: Year 1 Implementation West Virginia DOE to provide updated curriculum guidelines aligned to national certification. Year 1 will act as the first phase to determine curriculum relevance and collect student outcome data. Certification is MANDATORY if utilizing Perkins IV funds ATI Allied Health preparation resources to be utilized in order to identify at-risk students and implement best practice remediation tools: -study guides -practice assessments -focused remediation

Steps for Student Success • Complete Site Application to become testing site • Prepare students through classroom instruction • Incorporate preparation resources (study guides, practice tests) for in-class and at home study • Faculty training to navigate certification portal • Select convenient testing date • Tell Healthcare Education Consultant selected date, testing method, and number of students • Online student registration • Administer certification • Students receive results and provisional certification
