  10. Self • Composed of two parts • Me • created through socialization • Accounts for predictability and conformity • Considers the consequences of the self. • I • Creative part of the self • Unpredictable & spontaneous • First reaction of the self comes from the I.

  11. Agents of Socialization • Family • Schools • Hidden curriculum – the informal and formal goals of school • Discipline, order, cooperation, & conformity • Peer Groups (individuals of the same age and interests) • Mass Media

  12. Processes of Socialization • Total Institutions • Mental hospitals, cults, prisons • Military • Desocialization • The process by which people give up old norms, values, attitudes, and behaviors. • Destruction of old self-concepts or personal identity.

  13. Resocialization • Once the self has been broken down by desocialization, resocialization begins. • People accept new norms, values, attitudes and behaviors. • Rewards and punishments attempt to create the new “identity”. • Also occurs as a child becomes a teenager, when a teenager gets a job, and as the elderly move in retirement.

  14. Anticipatory Socialization • Voluntary change • Usually occurs in people moving from one stage of life to another. • Preteens observe teens (their reference group). • College seniors talk to people working in their intended job field.
