  1. Week of 9/16/13 Happy Third Week of School! • NEWS • At Camp FIRE, we will not have traditional homework. Research has shown that most of the homework that teachers send home tends to be busy work that doesn’t increase learning. • HOWEVER, research has also shown that the more parents are involved in student learning, the more successful the student is in school. • Each student will receive assignments that will require your child to go to the library and do various activities including: • Checking out books • Putting books on hold • Finding books on a certain subject. • Finding books on a certain genre. • All of these assignments will come with detailed, easy to follow instructions. The first assignment is included on the back of this newsletter. This Week in School… In Math we are continuing to learn about place value and rounding numbers. In Reading we are examining the differences and similarities between different creation myths from around the world. In Writing we are learning about sentence structure and punctuation. In Science we are learning about the water cycle. Camp FIRE Newsletter Wish List: Tissues Lysol Wipes Paper Towels

  2. Library Assignment for the week of 9/16/13 • Due by: Monday, September 23, 2013 • NOTE: This assignment is easy, free, and MANDATORY. Failure to complete this assignment will affect your student’s grade and prevent them from participating in certain activities in the classroom. • Instructions: • Take your child to a local library. There are many Toledo libraries. The closest branch to Summit Academy is Toledo Heights, 423 Shasta Drive. It is just a few blocks from the school, so it will be easy to make a quick stop after you pick your child up from school. Here are their hours of operation: • Monday and Tuesday: 9 a.m. – 8:30 p.m. • Wednesday – Friday: 9 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. • If these hours don’t work for you there are plenty of libraries in Toledo with weekend hours. Go to toledolibrary.org for a full listing, or call 419-259-5200. • Bring with you a picture ID with current address OR a picture ID and a utility bill. NOTE: A legal guardian must be there with your child to sign them up. Tell the librarian you wish to sign your child up for a library card. I’m sending home the form you will need to fill out, but if you forget it at home that’s okay they will have some at the library. If your child already has a card, fantastic! You’re already ahead of the game. • Once your child has gotten their new card, they should check out a book, any book they want! • Sometime before next Monday, they need to bring in their card and the white slip with the due date for the book they checked out. • Thank you and happy book hunting! 
