  1. Making the Case for Events Weekend 2

  2. Weekend Structure • Class discussion: weeks 5-8 • Coffee • Guest speaker:Lynn McPhee Glasgow 2014 bid • Lunch • Assessment 1 feedback and Assessment 2 preparation. Liverpool 08 Case Study: review and discussion • Coffee • Group Task: Impact of Election Manifestos on the Events Industry

  3. Revisiting Weeks 5-8 • Critically evaluate the role of ‘legacy’ in event bidding and subsequent event delivery strategies. • Using practical examples identify and examine the critical issues likely to impact upon event bidding strategies and peripatetic event delivery in future years.

  4. General Assessment Feedback The overall performance was good. The examples used were relevant but lacked specifics at times. Sometimes switched between the IOC and your example to show the dimensions Confusion between dimensions one and two at times. Good evidence of knowledge and understanding and good evidence of having read relevant materials

  5. Case Study: Liverpool 08

  6. Liverpool’s story • La Princesse - 37 tonne creation - 1.8 m showcase of french performance artists in Liverpool • First English city to become ECOC • Liverpool Culture Company formed to deliver the event • 350 events showcased the city’s cultural life and cultural development • A unique research programme that evaluated the effects of Liverpool 08

  7. Case Study • This case study will explore the strategies and techniques employed by Liverpool to secure the nomination as European City of Culture and then in the subsequent delivery of the programme of events. • In particular, the case study will focus upon the measuring and evaluation of the long term legacy and impact of the programme.

  8. Case Study Questions… • The key to our success was convincing the panel they were awarding a scholarship, not a reward(Bob Scott, Liverpool 08) • 1. Drawing upon the Liverpool 08 case study and relevant theoretical literature, critically discuss the extent to which peripatetic event bidding processes are increasingly centred on an instrumental logic based around the creation of ‘legacy’. • 2. Drawing upon the case study and appropriate theoretical perspectives, critically discuss the importance of the ‘Liverpool Model’ for cultural event evaluation now, and in the future

  9. GROUP TASK: Election Manifestos The objective is to provide three briefings upon likely scenarios for UK cities bidding for major events after the 2010 General Election for the Executive Director of EventBritain Accordingly, each Group is to access via the internet ONE of the following UK Party manifestos for the 2010 General Election • The Labour Party Manifesto 2010: a Future Fair for All • An Invitation to Join the Government of Britain: the Conservative Manifesto 2010 • Liberal Democrat Manifesto 2010: The Group should quickly review their Manifesto for its implications for UK cities competing in the international events sector in terms of: • economic factors • social factors • political factors • overall analysis Each Group is to report in the form of a ten minute presentation briefing for the Executive Director. The presentation should be based upon the premise that the Party being reviewed holds power after the Election.

  10. GROUP TASK: Election Manifestos Do not just search for "events"; rather, you should consider implications for bidding against other nations and cities in the environment set out by the Manifesto, e.g. the state of the economy the focus / foci of public spending the social conditions that are being encouraged - families; communities; active participation, etc the direction of law and order what each means by "society" the "model" of nationhood being offered and its implications for national identity. Please work from the Manifestos themselves, rather than some of the newspaper summaries on the internet. To that end, I expect some direct quotes from Manifestos in the presentations. Remember what is NOT being asked here is to provide a review and judgement of the Manifesto. The main purpose here is to help you show that you understand the effect upon 'making the case' of a wide range of economic, social and political factors.
