Voyage to America • What Date is Important to Remember? - Mayflower left England in the year of 1620. • Why Did They Make the Dangerous Voyage? - Many people left for freedom, riches and adventure • What was the ship’s condition like? - The ship had loads of bad food, storms hit the ship, there were only uncomfortable beddings for the Pilgrims, diseases and unsanitary conditions were all around them. • What Are Some Interesting Facts? -When the Mayflower left, it carried 101 passengers and when they arrived, there were 102 passengers. - Each family were allowed to bring a chest and a bible.

Colonial America 13 Colonies What are Some Major Events? 1) 1607; First permanent English settlement in Jamestown, Virginia. 2) 1733; 13 colonies settled along the Atlantic Coast 3) 1776; Declaration of Independence Who was Involved in the Colonization? - William Penn, Quakers, British, Europeans, Dutch, Puritans How Would You Feel If You were a Native American in America? - We’ll feel kind of happy because we can trade, kind of mad because the people are settling on OUR land and probably take OUR land, too. How Do You Think the Conflicts Between the England and the Colonists Will Effect History? -We think that the conflicts between the England and the Colonists will effect history because the U.S wouldn’t have created if the colonists didn’t win the war against the British.   4. Pilgrims and Colonial Williamsburg • What Skill Would You Like to Have Had? Explain why. - Erik’s Skill - If I had a special talent, I would probably want to build things for the colonies like household objects and tools because I like helping people and making new things to make my life and others easier and more enjoyable. - Laura’s Skill - If I had a special skill, I would want to make toys for the children in the colony because they might get bored when there is no toys to play with. For example, I will make dolls for girls and tops for boys. • How Did the Pilgrims Use Their Resources for Their Daily Life (Food/Water/Shelter)? - The Pilgrims used plants and animals for food to eat and to use for medicine. For food, they ate corns, fish and bread. Their shelters were usually a small simple house and was dim inside. Inside of a house, there were only limited furniture, fireplace and bed.

Colonial Kids / Home Life • Explain the Chores for the Boys and Girls. • Boys’ Chores - The boys who lived in the colony, sawed, chopped wood, made brooms, carved utensils and tools and cared for silkworms. • Girls’ Chores - The girls mended, plucked feathers off geese, pieced quilts, made soap, and churned butter. • Explain in Detail the Clothing of the Children. • Children’s Clothing - Boys from age 0 to 5 or 6 wore dresses and when they got older, they dressed just like their fathers. - Girls dressed just like their mothers.

  6. Compare / Contrast Modern Day VS Colonial life There are textbooks to use at school We all have houses We, children or adults, have chores to do. There are people who grow food in the farm or at a garden

Compare / Contrast (continued) • Include Information on Education and Discipline - If a child misbehaved they would be whipped, paddling and other things to make them feel ashamed. - In the South, many children were homeschooled. When they went to school they learned how to read and write. - The students used hornbooks (textbooks), see-through sheets. - Girls rarely went to went to school.
