El Pretérito Special rule for verbs ending in –gar, -car, or –zar Because of the sound these letters make when followed by an e or an i, a special rule must apply when using these verbs in the preterite in the yo form. • g changes to gu when followed by an e or i llegar=to arrive I arrived = yo llegué • c changes to qu when followed by an e or an i sacar = to take out I took out the trash.= Yo saqué la basura. • z changes to c when followed by an e or an i almorzar = to eat lunch I ate lunch= Yo almorcé
