  4. Distractions • 8,000 crashes occur everyday from texting. • 11% of survivors in crashes admit they were texting. • At highway speed, for every 5 seconds eyes leave the road, a car travels approx. 300 feet.

  5. Deaths Officers Found 3 phones in women’s car who died in car crash and 2 phones were open. Driving distractions was cause of 3,092 deaths and 416,000 injuries in 2010. Drunk people have better break reaction than those texting.

  9. Previous Solutions With the Goal of Preventing Texting While Driving KaitlynCassady

  10. Solution 1: Public Service Announcements • It is quite common to see advertisement and Public Service Announcements such as the one to the right in magazines, billboards, and commercials on the television. • They often contain dramatic images or language, or personal testimonies.

  11. Drawbacks to Public Service Announcements • Although saddening, videos and images can’t prevent someone from texting while driving. • After time has passed since someone sees one of these announcements, the effect it had on them won’t be near as dramatic and will have little effect in preventing them from texting at the wheel.

  12. Solution 2: Distracted Driving Summits • The US Department of Transportation started funding these distracted driving summits in 2009. • In the picture, victims and their families are being introduced and about to share devastating stories to the summit audience.

  13. Drawbacks to Distracted Driving Summits • Participating in these summits is voluntary, so very few citizens would directly benefit from these summits. • More than likely, most people who choose to participate in a summit are concerned about distracted driving and less likely to participate in texting while driving in the first place.

  14. Solution 3: Legislative Action • The map to the right shows US laws on texting while driving as of April 2013.

  15. Drawbacks to Legislative Action • People break laws all the time, so laws do not necessarily prevent the action from occurring and putting lives in danger. • In fact, as you can see in the chart to the right, people admit to still texting while driving, especially the younger generations. • It is hard for law officers to spot someone texting while driving due to an inability to see what the driver is doing inside the car.

  16. Overwhelming Theme • What is the overwhelming theme of all of these previous solutions? • The better solution is one that is able to positively prevent any driver from being able to text while they are driving. THEY DON’T ENSURE THAT TEXTING WHILE DRIVING WILL BE PREVENTED!
