  1. Seasons…

  2. Vocabulary terms and concepts • Tilt of Earth • Perihelion • Aphelion • Revolution • Eliptical • Rotation • Spring (Vernal), Summer (estival), Autumn (autumnal), Winter (hibernal)

  3. What are the Seasons? • Divisions of the year marked by changes in weather, ecology and hours of daylight.

  4. What causes the seasons? • They are the result of Earth’s revolution around the sun AND • The tilt of Earth on it’s axis

  5. Revolution • Complete orbit of the Earth around the sun • Complete orbit if the moon around the Earth.

  6. Rotation • Turning of the Earth on its axis • Completed in approximately 24 hours • Moon rotates on its axis at the same speed as the Earth rotates.

  7. Elliptical • Egg shaped; • Oblique circle • Elongated circle

  8. Copy this picture into your notes…just as you see it!!! B C A D

  9. During the months of May, June, and July, which letter below would represent the location of the Northern hemisphere? Write your answer below your drawing: May, June, July = ________(which letter)

  10. During May, June and July, which way do you think the earth is tilted in its orbit? During May, June, and July, the Northern hemisphere is exposed to more direct light. Do you need to change your answer?

  11. Which letter below would represent the winter in the southern hemisphere?

  12. Which letter below would represent the winter in the southern hemisphere? If you choose letter C you would be correct. When we are experiencing Summer in the Northern Hemisphere…the Southern Hemisphere is experiencing Winter.

  13. Label your diagram with C = Summer. If C = Summer in the Northern Hemisphere, then where would be our winter?

  14. Label your diagram. A = Winter B = Spring C = Summer D = Autumn

  15. Perihelion • Point in the Earth’s orbit where it is closest to the sun.

  16. Aphelion • Point in the Earth’s orbit where it is further from the sun.

  17. What do you notice about the distance of Earth from the sun in summer and winter?

  18. What do you notice about the tilt of the Earth in this very accurate drawing of seasons?
