What is it? • An anxiety disorder where people think thoughts and ideas they don’t want. • Related to Tourette Syndrome. • Symptoms occur usually at age 30.
Symptoms • Not related to drug use • Major distress in fear of everyday life • Checking and rechecking and rechecking and rechecking etc. • Excessive counting • Fear of germs • (Person usually realizes behavior is repetitive and unreasonable)
Treatment • Medication such as: • Celexa • Prozac • Luvox • Paxil • Zoloft
Side Effects of Medication • Difficulty starting urination • Drop in blood pressure from seated position to standing position • Dry mouth • Drowsiness
Expectations • OCD is a long term or chronic illness • Period of symptom free time is unusual • Most improve after treatment
Prevention • No known prevention for this illness
