  2. The Quiet Revolution- period of intense change in Quebec • In 1959, Quebec premier Maurice Duplessis dies. • Under Duplessis,the Roman Catholic church ran the educational system and the health care system • Lets read pages 253-55 & summarize who he was

  3. 1960- Jean Lesage becomes Premier • He “secularized” Quebec society • Government took control of health care and education. • Allowed unionization of civil service • “Nationalized” electricity production & distribution • Quebec became more modern • Their slogan was “Maitres Chez Nous” or “masters in our own house”.

Tension in Quebec towards Canada... • Why was the capital of Canada English speaking? • Why were key cabinet positions never held by French speaking politicians? • Why did workers in Ontario earn more for the same job than a worker in Quebec? • Why don’t French-Canadians have the rights to their own schools outside of Canada, a right that English-Canadians have in Quebec? Quebecer’s felt that Quebec was home to a “French” nation in Canada. Some did not want to be part of Canada

  5. Tension in Canada towards Quebec: • Why are people in Quebec always complaining? • Why don’t people in Quebec want to be a part of Canada? • Why is the government always trying to appease them? Have you ever felt this way?

Pearson’s Response • Appointed Royal Commission on Bilingualism & Biculturalism- led to official bilingualism in Canada (Official languages Act) • Let provinces opt out of Federal programs and get the money instead (eg- Quebec has no CPP) • Tried to attract French Canadians to Ottawa to be a force in the government (Trudeau) • Changed the flag in 1965

  7. FLQ • Some Quebecer’s weren’t satisfied & decided to turn to urban terrorism to get their message across: Front de liberation du Quebec (FLQ) But first we got to look at our man, the guy who fights the FLQ - TRUDEAU
