  2. ExplorationKEY TERMS • Colony- A group of people who settle in a distant land but are still ruled by the government of their native land. • Alliance- An agreement between nations to aid and protect one another.

ExplorationKEY TERMS • Conquistador- Name for Spanish explorers who conquered and claim lands in the Americas for Spain. • Coureur de bois- French colonists who lived and worked in the woods as fur trappers. • Missionary- Person who tries to spread certain religious beliefs among a group of people.

Jamestown and PlymouthKEY TERMS • Charter- A legal document giving certain rights to a person or company. • Burgess- A representative in the colonial Virginia government. • Representative Government- A political system in which voters elect representatives to make laws for them. • Established church- A chosen religion of the state.
