  1. Jamestown First Settlement in the New World for England

  2. Jamestown • This colony struggled in the beginning. • John Smith’s leadership keeps colony going. • John Rolfe introduced a new type of tobacco. This makes Jamestown profitable. • Tobacco will increase the demand for labor, which leads to the expansion of slavery.

  3. Southern Colonies • Their economies are based on agriculture and plantation society. • Slavery gets a strong foot hold in this region.

  4. New England Colonies • These colonies were established because of religious persecution back in Europe and the desire to start a new life. • Their economies were not just based on agriculture. They had a balanced economy. An example of this is skilled craftspeople and merchants.

  5. Middle Colonies • Many people settle the middle colonies to avoid religious persecution like the Quakers (William Penn). • Their economy was balanced, however it had a strong agricultural base. They did grow staple crops in the middle colonies.

  6. English Control of the Colonies • As the colonies began to make large amounts of money, England began enact more control over the colonies.

  7. The French and Indian War • This was a war between England and the French over the control of North America. • The is fought over the course of seven years. • England will win this war. France losses everything except Canada. • England is left with a large debt from the war.

  8. Britain (England) & Taxes • England decides to raises taxes on the colonies to pay for the war. • The colonies did not respond well to this idea. • They want representation in Parliament if they are going to be taxed by the government. • “No Taxation without Representation”

  9. Important Taxes • The Stamp Act – This taxed paper products. (An everyday item) • Colonists go nuts over it. They boycott the tax and organize protest. • The Stamp Act is repealed. This was the biggest mistake Parliament could have made. • The repealing of the Stamp Act gave the colonist a sense of power.

  10. Townshend Act • This was a tax on almost every item an individual used. It even taxed tea. • This new tax enrages the colonies.

  11. Boston Massacre
