  1. MYP Community Project

What is the MYP Community Project? • It’s an ongoing community service activity that Phoenix Academy’s 8th grade Middle Years Programme (MYP) students will work on the majority of the year. • Students will focus on one area of service that they are passionate about. • Theywill create a project to make a positive impact in the community of their choice. • The 8th Grade Community Project builds on the service-learning time students completed in 6th and 7th grade.

  3. Who participates? • Every 8th grader at Phoenix Academy must complete a Community Project. • Students can work individually, in pairs, or in groups of a maximum of three students.

  4. What does a Community Project Mentor do? • Each teacher will act as a mentor for a group of students, guiding and assisting them throughout the year and their project/s. • The mentors are there to assist students but they are not responsible for getting the projects completed, the students need to take ownership of their own projects. • Students need to come prepared to each mentor meeting, and work with their mentor to reschedule their meeting if they miss a meeting.

Structure of the Project • Every student keeps an individual Process Journal, recording their progress in their assigned journal. • Even if a student is working in a group of 2 or 3, each student will need to keep an individual binder. • Students will receive a Community Project binderoutlining due dates that need to be followed very carefully. • There are tasks that will make up a "Process Journal”

Process Journal Objectives There are 4 Objectives that make up the Community Project Objective A: Investigating • Define a goal to address a need within a community, based on personal interest • Identify prior learning and subject-specific knowledge relevant to the project • Demonstrate research skills Objective B: Planning • Develop a proposal for action to serve the need in the community • Plan and record the development process of the project • Demonstrate self-management skills

Process Journal Objectives (Continued) Objective C: Taking Action • Demonstrate service as action as a result of the project • Demonstrate thinking skills • Demonstrate communication and social skills Objective D: Reflection • Evaluate the quality of the service as action against the proposal • Reflect on how completing the project has extended their knowledge and understanding of service leaning • Reflect on their development of IB Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills

Steps to Complete the Community Project • Step 1: Brainstorm to identify a need within your community • Step 2: Decide on your goal and how you can achieve your goal • Step 3: Connect your goal to an IB Global Context • Step 4: Research and plan your service project • Step 5: Execute your service project • Step 6: Create a product to present your project • Step7: Present your project

Student Responsibilities • Important tips for successfully completing the project: • Read and follow directions for the Community Project. • Be prepared for each meeting with your mentor and do not fall behind. • Meet with mentor on the assigned dates. Reschedule the meeting if you miss it. • Take the project and your mentor suggestions seriously from the start. • This is an independently driven project so you must take responsibility for your own work.

Student Responsibilities (Continued) • Important tips for successfully completing the project: • Sign your mentor/mentee sheet (at the front of your binder) every time that you meet with your mentor. • You will need to turn your meeting log, academic honesty packet, your report and presentation in two days before your presentation at the end of the year. Documentation is important! • To earn the Community Project Certificate at the end of the year you have to complete your project, turn in all your documentation on time, and give your presentation. Plan for success!

Parent Support • Parents, we ask that you read the Community Project Binder so that you’re informed about the project. • We ask that you encourage and support your child to keep up with his/her journals. • We want to ask that you please help us and drop your child off as soon as carline starts on the days that they’re supposed to meet with their mentor. This will give your child some quiet time to meet with their mentor before other students arrive. • Thank you in advance for the support that you’re going to give your 8th grader. We appreciate you so much!
