Islam • A monotheistic Abrahamic religion • All the prophets (i.e., Adam, Moses, Abraham, Jesus) have been revealing this faith—their teachings have been partially misinterpreted or altered over time ---the last prophet, Mouhammad is a prophet for all of mankind • Guidance is from the Holy Quran (non-altered God’s words) and the teachings (hadith) and examples (sunnah) of the Prophet Mouhammad (peace be upon him) • Purpose of mankind is to submit to and worship God (Allah) • Those who believe in Islam are called Muslim—”one who submits to God”

Brief Islamic History • Begins with Adam and continues with prophets • Prophet Mouhammad—the seal of the prophets (610-632) • Initial caliphates (leader of Muslim community) were companions of the Prophet Mouhammad (pbuh) • Expansion of Islamic Empire—Persia, Byzantine • 100 years later—expanded from Spain to Indus • Islamic civilization—Golden Age of Islam (700-1200s) • Many centers of culture and science • High literacy rate • Advances in math, physics, medicine (hospital), astronomers, mathematicians • Technology—irrigation systems and canals • Islam swept along Africa by the 11th century • Mongol invasion, Black Death • Ottoman Empire-1200s • 1700-1800s--under the influence of European Powers • 1920--After WW1, the Ottoman territories were then partitioned into several nations--Treaty of Sèvres. • 1924- the first President of the Turkish Republic, MustfaKemal Ataturk abolished the institution of the Caliphate
