  1. Session 2 – Collection of data: review of concepts and methods Review on the calculation of active substancesMalta, 17-18 January 2008Transition Facility Statistical Cooperation Programme 2005 LOT 2 – Pesticide Indicators

  2. The quantity of each substance listed in Annex III contained in PPPs used on each selected crop shall be compiled with the total area cultivated and the 'area of the crop treated' with each substance. Quantities of substances used shall be expressed in kgs. Background: the draft Regulation

  3. More than 350 categories of products: Fungicides and Bactericides: around 100 Herbicides, Haulm Destructors and Moss Killers: around 140 Insecticides and Acaricides: around 90 Molluscicides: 4 Plant Growth Regulators: around 20 Other PPPs: around 20 Annex III: Harmonised classification of substances

  4. The use of a.s. (BCPC - British Crop Production Council) allows: comparisons between countries (PPPs can differ in names and compositions between countries), calculation of environmental risk/toxicity, through conversion of all quantities of commercial products (that can be in kg or in litres) in the same unit (grams/kg of a.s.). From PPPs to Active Susbtances (A.S.)

  5. Products may be expressed in: Grams or Liters (e.g. seed treatment) which will have to be converted to kgs later on. In any case, if the product is liquid,  the content in a.s. will in principle be given in  grams/litre. Conversion from liters to grams/kg of A.S.

  6. The BCs are using between 80 (SI) and 462 (RO) different PPPs on wheat. Example of commercial product.: Kemikars T s.k is a product used in Latvia, containing following a.s.: Karboksins (English name: Carboxin): an anilide fungicide (F6.3.); content: 200 g/l., Tirams (English name: Thiram): a dithiocarbamate fungicide (F2.3.) ; content: 200 g/l. From PPPs to A.S.

  7. Example of a.s.: THIRAM is an a.s. used in following 3 commercial products in Latvia: Kemikars T s.k. (content: 200 g/l.) Raksils Ekstra 515 s.k. (content: 500 g/l.) Vitavakss 200 FF (content: 200 g/l.g). From PPPs to A.S. (cont.)

  8. Weight of a.s. applied The weight of each a.s. applied during the 12-month period has to be calculated for: • Basic area treated (physical area receiving a particular pesticide (independently of the number of applications); • Total cultivated area (i.e. whole observed area, whether treated or not); • Average n° of applications (the formulation area treated i.e. the sum of the areas treated with the different PPPs containing 1 specific a.s., divided by the basic area treated with this a.s.) Note: Seed treatment has to be included.

  9. Weight of a.s. applied : case 1 • Example: 1 farm of 2 ha. with 2 plots of 1 ha. each receiving 5 tons of seed each: • On each plot (2 ha): seed treatment: Maksims 0.25 s.k.: quantity of PPP used: 15 liters; recommended dosage: 1.5 l./ton of seed ; corresponding a.s. : Fludioxonil - code F.11: content of a.s. 25 g/l (25g a.s. per l. of PPP); • 1 plot of 1 ha treated with Lograns: weight of PPP used: 25g ; recommended dosage: 25g/ha ; corresponding a.s.: Triasulfuron - code H6.1.: content of a.s.: 200 g/kg (200 g of a.s. per kg of PPP).

  10. Weight of a.s. applied : case 1 (cont.) Whole farm: Plot 1 + 2 (Maksims/Lograns): 2 ha. • Weight a.s. applied was 380 g. : 25*15=375 + 200*(1000/25)=5 • Average quantity of a.s. applied per basic area treated: 187.5 g. (375g/2ha) for Fludioxonil (Maksims) and 5 g (5g/1ha) for Triasulfuron (Lograns)

  11. Weight of a.s. applied : case 1 (cont.) Whole farm: Plot 1 + 2 (Maksims/Lograns): 2 ha. • Average quantity of a.s. applied per cultivated area: 187.5 g. (375g/2ha) for Fludioxonil (Maksims) and 2.5g (5g/2ha) for Triasulfuron (Lograns) • Average n° of applications: formulation area/basic area treated = 2 ha/2ha= 1 application for Maksims and = 1ha/2ha=0.5 application for Lograns

  12. Weight of a.s. applied: case 2 Example: 1 mix of 2 products with several a.s.: Epoxiconazole (F4.1)/Kresoxim-methyl (F6.16) applied on 2 ha. on a farm of 4 ha: • Consider each quantity of a.s. (9 a.s. for Epoxiconazole) and (4 a.s. for Kresoxim-methyl) some of which appear in both products

  13. Weight of a.s. applied: case 2 (cont.) 125 + 83 + 125 + 10 + 50 + 62.5 + 125 + 67 + 84 = 731.5*2=1463 g. of a.s. applied Allegro Plus s.e. Allegro Super s.e. Allegro s.k. Maksims Stars 035 s.k. Opera s.e. Opera N s.e. Opus s.k. Bells s.k. Tango Super s.e.

  14. Weight of a.s. applied : case 2 (cont.) 125 + 83 + 125 + 150 = 483*2=966 g. of a.s. applied Allegro Plus s.e. Allegro Super s.e. Allegro s.k. Mentors s.e. Total weight of a.s.applied: 1463+966=2429 g.

  15. Weight of a.s. applied : case 2 (cont.) Average quantity of a.s. applied per basic area treated by a.s.: • Allegro Plus s.e.: (125+125)/2=125 g/ha • Allegro Super s.e.: (83+83)/2=83 g/ha • ... • Mentors s.e.: 150/2=75 g/ha

  16. Weight of a.s. applied : case 2 (cont.) Average quantity of a.s. applied per cultivated area by a.s.: • Allegro Plus s.e.: (125+125)/4=62.5 g/ha • Allegro Super s.e.: (83+83)/4=41.5 g/ha • ... • Mentors s.e.: 150/4=37.5 g/ha

  17. Weight of a.s. applied : case 2 (cont.) Average n° of applications by a.s.: • Allegro Plus s.e.: (2*2)/2=2 • Allegro Super s.e.: (2*2)/2=2 • ... • Mentors s.e.: (1*2)/2=1

  18. Concrete example of Malta will be given as an illustration.
