All cells have all your DNA inside them • Once a cell becomes a certain type of cell, it has specialized. • At this point it can “shut down” genes that it doesn’t need (ex: skin cells can shut down the genes that tell the heart how to beat) so they can only become that one type of cell • Stem Cells are cells that have not “shut down” any DNA ~ So they can become any type of cell. Why are stem cells important?
