  2. Learning objective:Today we will describe how the chloroplasts in plant cells capture sunlight energy in the process photosynthesis. Think about it. What can animals do that plants cannot?

  3. How do living things obtain energy? • Nearly all living things obtain energy either directly or indirectly from the energy of sunlight captured during photosynthesis.

  4. What is an autotroph? • An autotroph is an organism that makes its own food. • EX. Plants

  5. What is a heterotroph? • A heterotroph is an organism that cannot make its own food. • EX. Animal

  6. What is photosynthesis? • Photosynthesis is the process by which a cell captures energy in sunlight and uses it to make their own food

  7. What is Stage One of Photosynthesis? Stage 1: Capturing the sun’s energy with chloroplasts • It involves capturing the energy in sunlight. • It occurs mostly in the leaves of plants, in the chloroplasts.

  8. What is chlorophyll? • The main pigment in the chloroplasts that is responsible for photosynthesis is chlorophyll. • Chlorophyll functions like a solar calculator. • It captures energy from sunlight and uses it to power the second stage.

  9. What is Stage two of Photosynthesis? Stage 2:Using Energy to Make Food • The cell uses the captured energy to produce sugars, called glucose. • Two raw materials are needed to accomplish this- water and carbon dioxide.

  10. How does water get to the chloroplasts? • The roots absorb water from the soil. • The water then moves up through the plant’s stem to the leaves.

  11. How does the carbon dioxide get to the chloroplasts? • Carbon Dioxide enters the plant through the small openings (called stomata) on the underside of the leaves. • Once in the leaves, the water and carbon dioxide move into the chloroplasts.

  12. What happens in the chloroplasts? • Inside the chloroplasts, the water and carbon dioxide undergo a complex series of chemical reactions. • The reactions are powered by the energy captured from sunlight in stage 1 of photosynthesis. • The products made from the chemical reaction are glucose(sugar) and oxygen.
