Conscious Eating • Knowing and understanding exactly what you’re putting into your body • Everybody knows that eating whole grain options, dark green leafy vegetables, colorful fruits full of antioxidants and lean protein, or vegetable protein is good for you, but why is society opting for highly processed food like substances instead?

Childhood Obesity in Alberta • 1.6 million Canadians 5-17 years old are overweight (31%) • That means thatalmost a third of children in Alberta alone are obese or overweight • It is clear that we need to make changes to our eating habits! • slow down and take time to cook delicious, easy, whole food recipes that the whole family will love and benefit from!

Side Effects of Obesity • Obesity-related Diseases: Hypertension (High Blood Pressure), coronary heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, stroke, sleep apnea, cancer, depression and other serious health problems • Obesity is one of the leading factors in heart disease and stroke, as well as in Type 2 diabetes, which affects an estimated 1.8 million Canadians. If you are overweight, you are at high risk of becoming obese, which can more seriously affect your health.

GMO’s • Genetically Modified Organisms- crop plants created for human or animal consumption using the latest biological techniques, to produce higher yields and increased resistance to disease • Because GMO’s are still new technology not all the side effects are yet known, but some side effects of GMO’s are allergic reactions, decreased nutritional value and antibiotic resistance • Bill C-257 has been introduced by the NDP to force the food companies to label whether their product has been genetically modified. Aspartame • An artificial sweetener used in many diet foods and drinks because it has no calories or fat • There are many controversial side effects to aspartame which include headaches, weight gain and is a possible carcinogen • Interesting Fact: the Pilots Association advises against Pilots consuming aspartame because it can compromise their ability to fly a plane

  8. Healthy Lifestyle Habits • Be aware of the food items you are buying from the grocery store. Ask yourself “do I know what is in my food?” • Try to pick 2 days a week to prep meals, if you have children include them in the process • Try to steam vegetables to retain the nutritional value • The internet has countless ideas and healthy recipes, it is easy to swap healthy meals to make a difference in your overall wellbeing

Well I don’t Have Time….. • It doesn't’t take much more time to prep healthy meals in a week, and when at the grocery store take the extra 30 seconds to read the label on the product • For example there are an average of 21 minutes of commercials in a 1 hour TV program, why not prep your meals during the commercials? • Conscious eating is a awesome way that people can take control of their bodies and health and make positive changes that will be long lasting

  12. Green Smoothies • Green Smoothies: take 15-20 minutes to be digested and absorbed by the body; are high in fiber, and an easy way to add more dark green leafy vegetables to your diet. They are also easy to make, prepare, and clean  • Ex, Hulk Smash smoothie: 4 handfuls of spinach, 1 banana, almond milk, 1tbsp flax seed, 1 cup blueberries, ice
