  2. Lewis and Clark Meriwether Lewis and William Clark were explorers hired by President Thomas Jefferson. In 1803 they explored the territory west of the Mississippi River. They were army officers and explorers called Corps of Discovery. Lewis and Clark began their trip in May 1804. Thomas Jefferson sent them to explore. They explored the Missouri River, The Rocky Mountains, and the rivers to the Pacific coast. They went because they wanted to explore the new land.

  4. Leaving Saint Lewis: On May 14, 1804, Lewis and Clark began their expedition. It began in Saint Louis on May 1804, and returned there in September 1806. Historians often refer to explorers as the Corps of Discovery They were exploring the land west of the Mississippi River all the way to the Pacific Coast. They were sent by President Thomas Jefferson to explore the wilderness. ToMap

  5. Meeting the Native Americans: Lewis and Clark met Sioux in August of 1804. Normally when they met Native Americans they helped each other. Native Americans provided them food. They also told them where to go. It was important to Lewis and Clarks journey because they met the Native Americans that helped them with directions and getting food. ToMap

  6. Fort Clatsop: The event took place December 1805 to March 1806. It took place in Astoria, Oregon. They named the fort for nearby Indians. They all moved to their new homes in December 25, 1805. It was important to their journey because they completed their journey and mapped the land. ToMap
