Feelings on the Annexation of New Mexico How did everyone feel about the annexation?
Annexation of New Mexico Territory • After the annexation of Texas, the United States planned on taking all of the remaining terrain belonging to Mexico. The United States was not interested in New Mexico, but knew that they would have to take control of the land in order to connect the Atlantic to the Pacific by railroad. Also, Mexico did not care much for New Mexico, but it belonged to them. They felt that the land had potential value in the future and didn’t want to give up that possibility. Aside from both countries not taking too much interest in New Mexico, there were still residents of New Mexico had split feelings on the annexation of the state.

Weber gives some viewpoints of all three sides. The article explains that the United States nor Mexico cared much about New Mexico, but that they both knew that it would be useful to them. Also, it states that New Mexicans were more fearful of the surrounding Native Americans than the United States.
Evaluation • David J. Weber was a professor at the Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. Before he passed away in August 2010, he was one of the nation’s leading scholars in the United States Southwest and Mexico. Professor Weber was also the founding director of the William P. Clements Center for Southwest Studies at SMU, which is part of the Clements Department of History. The Clements Center for Southwest Studies is the leading institute for the American West and the U.S.-Mexico borderlands. The article is published by reputable source, Public Broadcasting Service. In conclusion, the source is reputable.

He did so without the opposition of a force of 1,700 men. All the involved men were volunteering to aid the control of New Mexico Territory.
Evaluation • Andrew Glass views himself as an online pioneer. Even though Andy knows a couple well-known people, such as Bill Gates and Tim Berners-Lee, he doesn’t seem to have other blogs to prove he is a reputable source. Aside from working at POLITICO, Andrew Glass does not have any other work relating to the topic. The blog, therefore, is not a reputable source.

The article states that Mexicans view the war as a scar and a United States invasion. Whereas Americans felt that it was their mission to extend the “boundaries of freedom” due to the idea of manifest destiny.
Evaluation • I’m unable to locate information on the author, Ricardo Valenzuela. Looking at a few other tabs on his website, indicates that this is scholarly work done by a university student. The information that he provided is reputable and can be verified through the hyperlinks that he provided. In conclusion, the website is reputable.

They followed the idea of manifest destiny. Mexico did not like that New Mexico would become an American state.
Evaluation • Even though The History Guy does have some valuable information on the feelings of both the Mexican and American feelings on the annexation of New Mexico, it does not seem to have enough information. As for who the author is of the blog, it is unclear. It does, however, state that it originally was created for a high school Social Studies teacher to aid his students in finding quick and reliable sources to learn from. With the ability to add articles and posts to the blog, I feel that credibility of it is a bit in-between. The information I used was accurate. However, posts that may be added to the site may not have the same accuracy.

The only information that is related to the feelings of the annexation of New Mexico is that of the opposition to the treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo. President James K. Polk would have cared for a more extensive annexation of Mexican territory.
Evaluation • The Annexation of Texas, the Mexican-American War, and the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo, 1845- 1848 has accurate information on the annexation of New Mexico. Even though the information is accurate, there doesn’t seem to a specific author for the article. Also, there isn’t much information related to my topic. However, the website, U.S. Department of State, is a credible website.

Vasconcelos wrote that to the whites, “manifest destiny’ meant to “ kill all Mexicans and take Mexico”. Granted this does not explain the feelings of different groups that were involved in the annexation of New Mexico, but it is, however, a look into the mind of one person’s view on what he believes were injustices against the Mexicans involved. Also, the blog explains that from what occurred during the annexation of New Mexico eventually evolved into the Mexican Revolution.
Evaluation • I looked to see if there was any information on the author of The US “Southwest” was Stolen from Mexicans, but there doesn’t seem to be any information or even the author’s name. As far as the provided information, there does seem to be a lot of information on how the Mexicans felt about their treatment from the Americans. With the author using Jose Vasconcelos as a source for their information, this post has some credible information. However, there isn’t enough information to say that it is a completely credible blog. With that being said, I don’t feel that this blog is credible.

One section explains that there were blunt spokesmen that went as far to say that the United States made a bad deal in annexing New Mexico. Also, after the Civil War, General William T. Sherman was quoted in saying that “the United States ought to declare war on Mexico and make it take back New Mexico.” With that being said, it is very clear that the United States did not care at all for New Mexico. Another section of the article explains that New Mexicans strived to better their image in order to go from being a territory to being a state. Also, it states that nomad tribes were “suffering defeat and confinement on reservations”, meaning that they did not like that they were being pushed out and away from land that was originally theirs but they did it after fighting hard and losing.
Evaluation • I noticed that each section of the article doesn’t use only one author’s information, but many authors’ information. I believe that each author that has been acknowledged are all very credible. Marc Simmons and Erna Fergusson are a few authors who were acknowledged in the article. Marc Simmons is New Mexico’s best known and most famous historian. Erna Fergusson was a writer, historian, and storyteller that documented, for more than forty years, the culture and history of New Mexico. With their extensive knowledge of New Mexico and it’s history, I believe that they, and the website, are a credible source(s).
Conclusion • The annexation of New Mexico brought a lot of change for Mexicans/New Mexicans, Native Americans, and Americans. Mexicans/New Mexicans and Native Americans had to learn to live the way that Americans did while trying to keep their own way of living. Whereas Americans had to adjust to the way of life that Mexicans/New Mexicans and Native Americans were use to while making sure that they transitioned to the new way of life, the American way. Sadly, they still continue to try and live the “American way” without losing themselves completely and feelings continue to be hurt by Americans.
