  2. Working with Machinery Mechanical hazards: • Entanglement • Friction • Cutting, shearing, puncturing • Crushing • Drawing in • Impact

  3. Working with Machinery Mechanical hazards - sources: • In-running nips (rollers, belts etc) • Knives and blades • Rotating parts/surfaces • Rapidly moving parts • Moving machine tools and material • Parts pressing together (potential crushing) • Compressed air and hydraulic hoses etc

  4. Working with Machinery Non-mechanical hazards: Sources • Electricity- Exposed wiringand static electricity • Fire and heat - access to hot surfaces, pipes, etc • Hazardous substances (liquid, fume, dust etc) • Handling and lifting • Noise and vibration - people being close to source

  5. Working with Machinery Common injuries: • Fatalities (various causes) • Crushing, fractures and dislocations • Traumatic amputation • De-gloving • Eye injuries • Electric shock and burns • Cuts, bruises and strains

  6. Working with Machinery Common guarding arrangements: • Fixed enclosing guards • Guards with interlocks • Fixed fencing • Nip bars • Emergency stops, pull cords, • Zone protection using light beams & floor pressure sensors

  7. Working with Machinery Do’s: • Always understand the hazards and • how they are controlled • Always operate within the scope of safe • systems of work • Always report any concerns • Always wear appropriate PPE • Always think before you act

  8. Working with Machinery Don’ts: • Never assume a machine is safe • Never overcome guarding or fencing • Never try to access gaps in guards or fencing • Never operate machinery you are not • trained and authorised to use • Never operate machinery while under the influence of alcohol or drugs
