In Chapter 7, we explore Buck's relationship with his new master, John Thornton, building on the themes of loyalty and the conflict between his domesticated self and his wild instincts. As Buck’s desire to protect and obey Thornton grows, we question whether he will revert to being a gentle pet or if the wildness within him has been irrevocably awakened. This chapter poses critical questions about Buck’s identity: can he suppress the beast within, or has he crossed a point of no return?

Essential Question~Chapter 7~ Throughout Chapter 6 we learned about Buck’s fondness of John Thornton and Buck’s desire to protect and obey his new master. There were at least five specific events in Chp 6 that proved this allegiance. Question: Now that Buck has found a new master and is focused on pleasing that master, do you think he will become more of a pet again– one that is gentle and tame? Will the “wild” that was surfacing in Buck be suppressed? Or, is it too late? Has the inner beast in Buck been disturbed and now there is no turning back? Chapter 5
