This educational resource introduces students to the field of ecology, the study of interactions among organisms and their environment. It covers essential concepts such as the biosphere, levels of organization (species, population, community, ecosystem, biome), and distinguishes between biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living) factors that influence ecosystems. Through discussions, worksheets, and homework assignments, students assess environments and identify the intricate relationships that sustain life on Earth.

5-1-2012 Warm-up On the gold paper “The Biosphere” fill in the first block…3.1 How do we study life? Under “What I know”. In the SAME block, write what you think ECOLOGY is. *EVERYONE get s folder and put your name on it.
Today • What is Ecology? Discussion • What factors effect an environment? -worksheet/discussion HW: yes…we will discuss at the end
What is Ecology? • Ecology is the study of interactions among organisms and between organisms and their environment. ECO= means house (economics-human interactions based on money and trade, in nature= an organisms’ “house” and energy and nutrients needed to survive
Life on a Global Scale= BIOSPHERE • Biosphere contains the combined portions of the planet in which life exists, including land, water, and air or atmosphere. • Put the “Levels of organization” in order
Species • group of organisms so similar to one another that they can breed.
Population • groups of individuals that belong to the same species and live in the same area.
Communities • assemblages of the different populations that live together in a defined area.
Ecosystem • a collection of all the organisms that live together in a particular place as well as their nonliving or physical environment.
Biome • A group of ecosystems that have the same climate and similar dominant communities.

Consider the ENVIRONMENT:-conditions or factors surrounding an organism * some factors are living… *some factors are non-living… Biotic Abiotic
Biotic Factor: • Living components of an ecosystem • Living organisms that effect other living organisms • Ex: bacteria, fungi, plants, animals…
Abiotic Factor: *Non-living items that effect living organisms and their environment Ex: Temperature, sunlight, rocks, soil, climate, topography…..
Biotic? Abiotic?
Summary:How do we study life? • Field of ecology • Organisms & their environment (biotic/abiotic) • Eco=house • Levels of organization: species population community Ecosystem biomeBiosphere
Activities: • Biotic and Abiotic factors worksheet HW: • Choose an “Environment” to assess in your Lab book: -title: Biotic and Abiotic Factors in an Environment -Sketch an environment or cut/paste a picture -List all Biotic and abiotic factors.
