  1. The Western Sahara political turmoil around the Moroccan region

  2. Inroduction: You might be aware of the political conflict centering the western part of Sahara. The region was under Spanish rule till 1975. A majority area is under the jurisdiction of present Morocco. A call for regional autonomy has been in the discussion for decades. The European countries and a section of inhabitants in the region seek for higher administrative powers. A standard view is greater autonomy will enable the area to develop at a faster rate. Issues of humanity will also have less complication if the Moroccan region of Sahara makes and implement its policies.

  3. Humanitarian crisis: But there is severe opposition to the notion of autonomy for the Western Sahara region. The people and authorities who oppose the proposition say it a political ploy to make the area a direct subordinate of the first-world nations. The place already suffers from the problem of massive emigration due to a lack of security and development. A big chunk of the African Immigrants in Europe have their origins in the western part of Sahara. They have minimal resources to support a decent living. Thousands of them struggle to get two-square meals daily. The question of humanity looms large in the disputed place.

  4. The plan in brief: To solve the humanitarian crisis and the political disturbances in the region, concerned authorities and nations have proposed the Morocco Autonomy Plan. Political analysts think that the plan is a precursor to the independence of the region. It is an initiative by Morocco. It was first presented at the United Nations on 11th April, in the year 2007. It involves several diplomatic and administrative perspectives that may create a broader scope for the Moroccan administration. It hovers around the concept of self-determination and its referendum related to the region’s people.

  5. The premises: The prologue to the autonomy plan dates back at least to 9th April 2004. The document about people’s referendum as a proposal of the Personal Envoy, James Bakes, of the Security General, initiated the issue. The Moroccan authority sent a letter as a detailed reply to the Baker Plan. The kingdom of Moroccan disagreed with the ultimate form and nature of self-determination that the Baker Plan had proposed. It resulted in a diplomatic blockade that required some immediate solutions with constitutional backing. To establish a democratic procedure corresponding to the issue, Morocco proposed an autonomy plan with extensive features in the year 2007 to the international community.

  6. Anomalous points: If you perform a legal analysis of the autonomy plan, then you would find some glaring contradictions and anomalies. Point eight and point twenty-seven of the plan oppose each other with their implementation intent. Pint eight talks about the autonomy of the region. But point twenty-seven dilutes the scope by mentioning the involvement of foreign parties. Such a drawback certainly makes the plan more prone to revision.

  7. Looking forward: Nevertheless, the Security Council, Spain, specific European countries, Morocco, and people of Western Sahara need to sit together to find a concrete solution. The dynamic process to reach a mutually beneficial consensus should never cease. It is your right to hope that in the near future, the issue will find a positive result, and the humanitarian crisis will eventually end.
