Location Major cities within this region LA 307,006,550 San Francisco 808,976 San Diego 3,001,072 Colorado Springs 360890 Las Vegas 478434 Land forms and Resources • Rocky Mountains -extends more than 3,000 miles across the western part of North America • Great Basin - a large desert that covers 200,000 sq. miles in California, Idaho, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming • Mt. Ranier - 14,410 ft., 4,392 meters, Cascade in Washington, Highest peak in Washington • Mt. McKinley - 20,320 ft. 6,194 meters, Alaska Range in Alaska, Highest peak in North America • Mt Hood -11,239 ft, 3,426 Meters, Cascade in Oregon, Inactive volcano with many glaciers Relative location to compass The western part of the United States is located to the East of Asia, South of Canada, and borders the Pacific Ocean. Some people may choose to live in this region or big city because of the warm weather. Others may choose to live there because of jobs that they want to work for. California is known for acting, singing, and movie making. Plus there are many fun jobs like working with animals or doing shows at a famous park.

  3. Place Customs, religions, ethnic groups in region • The culture of the western part of the U.S is influenced by the European country. The Main language of the united states is English • Among developed countries, the U.S. is one of the most religious (primarily Christian) in terms of its demographics. Identify and locate- major resources Appalachian Mountains, Pacific Ocean, oil major landforms Appalachian Mountains, Pacific Ocean, Yellowstone, Las Vegas, Redwood forest Describe climate and weather patterns dry, warm and there are a lot of earthquakes *What effect does climate have on settlement patterns in the region? Most people like the warm weather so they will travel to the west where there are beaches and many fun parks to visit. Others may not like to live in the western part because they think it's dangerous because of the many earthquakes.

Detailed description of economic issues unemployment, In 2006 the unemployment issues were low at 4.2% and now in 2012 they are up to 10.2% How has climate affected the settlement of the region? Some people might like the warm weathers and others may not. Also the earthquakes may scare some people, and they may want to move. *How has pollution affected the lives of the people in the region? The pollution has affected the people who live on the cost because of dirty waters and beaches. Because of China, the United States is realizing that it is not just fog around everywhere but air pollution.

  5. Movement Identify why people have chosen to live where they have in the region. People choose to live where they want because of either weather, resources, or famous landmarks. To transport goods around from city to city people use cars, trucks and sometimes trains. *What might happen if one or more of the major transportation routes within the region were interrupted?People would get mad and depending on what they wanted they may not use a certain company again or might not use the same transportation route again. Plus it would take time and money to fix.
