Our Concerns • Finances ------- publishing costs, including development & running costs, not balanced by subscription revenues. • Market ------- too many journals in a limited and static market. • “Correct” pricing ------ economically viable pricing for non-profit academic societies. • Customer service ------ quick response to claim, usage report… need to be professional.

Case 1:Establishment of a Joint Publishing Institute – IPAP • Founding Societies Physical Society of Japan Founded 1877 - 19,000 members Members meet twice a year 5,200 participants & 4,000 presentations Japan Society of Applied Physics Founded 1946 - 23,000 members Members meet twice a year 9,000 participants & 5,000 presentations Research activities of members – very high

  4. Case 2: Establishment of Joint Publishing Institute – UniBio Press • UniBio Press (cf. BioOne) April 2004 - 3 titles~ 20 titles in 200x J. Mammalian Ova Research Mammal Study Zoological Science • Negotiating mutually acceptable pricing with the librarian community through Sparc/Japan Zoo. Sci. $175/yr in 2004 (+2.8%/yr in 2001)---->+0% in 2005?

Our Answers • Promote the high quality of our publications to related academic societies through key scientists and libraries. • Provide easier access and higher visibility to researchers, through various internet databases, SPIN, WoS, etc. (Elsevier?) • Introduce an acceptable pricing model, and encourage researchers and librarians to purchase. Through Sparc/Japan, Sparc/USA and Sparc/Europe.
