  2. Let’s first review what we learnt about place value of Whole Numbers before proceeding further. * PLACE VALUE helps you better understand the WHOLE NUMBERS (0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,.....) *To determine theVALUEof eachDIGIT in the number, we need to look at its PLACEin the number. CONFIDENTIAL

  3. For example, let's look at the number 423. Hundreds Place Tens Place Ones Place 4 2 3 The value of the 4 is 4 hundreds or 400 The value of the 2 is 2 tens or 20 The value of the 3 is 3 ones or 3 CONFIDENTIAL

  5. Let’s get started with the Decimal numbers. DECIMAL: A number that uses place value and a decimal point to show tenths, hundredths and the thousandths. • 0.1 is a decimal number for one tenth. • 0.12 is a decimal number for twelve hundredths. • 0.125 is a decimal number for one hundred twenty-five thousandths. DECIMAL POINT: A period separating the ones and the tenths in the decimal is the Decimal Point. CONFIDENTIAL

  6. The decimal 0.4 could be pronounced as FOUR TENTHSor as ZERO POINT FOUR . There are other decimals such as hundredths or thousandths. They all are based on the number ten just like our number system. A decimal may be greater than one. The decimal 3.4 would be pronounced as THREE AND FOURTENTHS. The decimal 11.64 could be pronounced as ELEVEN AND SIXTY-FOUR HUNDREDTHSor as TWELVE POINT SIXTY-FOUR . CONFIDENTIAL

  7. If a decimal is less than 1, place a zero before the decimal point. Write 0.7 not .7 • Tenths have one digit after the decimal point. The decimal 0.8 is pronounced “Eight tenths" or "zero point eight". • Hundredths have two digits after the decimal point. The decimal 0.36 is pronounced “Thirty-six hundredths" or "zero point thirty-six". • Thousandths follow a similar pattern. They have three digits after the decimal point. The decimal 0.749 is pronounced “Seven hundred forty-nine thousandths"or"zero point seven four nine". CONFIDENTIAL

  8. Decimal numbers, such as O.3657, have four digits after the decimal point.  Each digit is a different place value.   The first digit after the decimal point is called the tenths place value. There are Three tenths in the number O. 3657. The second digit tells you how many hundredths there are in the number.  The number O. 3657 has Six hundredths.  The third digit is the thousandths place which is Five thousandths.  The fourth digit is the ten thousandths place which is Seven ten thousandths in this example.  Therefore, there are Three tenths, Six hundredths, Five thousandths, and Seven ten thousandths in the number 0. 3657.
