The main priorities under the Convention (1) • Implementation of and compliance with protocols in force: • 1985 and 1994 Sulphur Protocols • 1988 NOx Protocol • 1991 VOC Protocol • The Executive Body has taken decisions on non-compliance concerning: • VOCs: Norway, Finland, Italy, Sweden • NOx: Greece, Spain

  5. The main priorities under the Convention (2) • Review and extension of protocols: • 1998 POPs and Heavy Metals Protocol (14mratifications each) • 1999 Gothenburg Protocol to Abate Acidification, Eutrophication and Ground-level Ozone (4 ratifications)

  6. Timing and content of Gothenburg Protocol review • The review should: • Commence in 2004 (dependant on entry into force in 2003) • Cover PM and its health impacts • Take account of hemispheric transport of air pollutants • Use 2015 and 2020 as preliminary target years

  7. The Executive Body (following the EMEP Steering Body): • Took note of the results of the uncertainty workshop, and requested all subsidiary bodies providing input to integrated assessment modelling to take these into account when planning further work • Recognized the importance of the work on the baseline scenario • Recognized the important links between regional air pollution and climate change, welcomed the work initiated to explore such links and requested EMEP to address all relevant aspects of these links in its future work • Approved the budget of CIAM for 2003 and 2004 as proposed and agreed to keep the 2005 budget at the same level

  8. The Executive Body, in December 2002 also: • Adopted a decision on the financing of core activities • Adopted a 5% increase in the EMEP budget and a new assessment scale from 2004 onwards • Adopted the new emission reporting guidelines and a decision

  9. Result of the 2003 emission data reporting round: 35 Partiers report 29 on time (bold) 21 with new format
