  4. My Teaching Philosophy I love teaching and I believe all students can learn. I am passionate about the lives we touch in this profession. Diversity and collaboration in the classroom is basic to the development of high-order thinking.

Mathematics Curriculum: 5th Grade • Operations and Algebraic Thinking • Write and interpret numerical expressions. • Analyze patterns and relationships. • Number and Operations in Base Ten • Understand the place value system. • Perform operations with multi-digit whole numbers and with decimals to hundredths. • Number and Operations—Fractions • Use equivalent fractions as a strategy to add and subtract fractions. • Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division to multiply and divide fractions. • Measurement and Data • Convert like measurement units within a given measurement system. • Represent and interpret data. • Geometric measurement: understand concepts of volume and relate volume to multiplication and to addition. • Geometry • Graph points on the coordinate plane to solve real-world and mathematical problems. • Classify two-dimensional figures into categories based on their properties.

  18. Texts and other materials In an effort to provide students with meaningful and rigorous learning opportunities in ELA, we will not depend on a textbook this year. Instead, your students will be expected to read actual texts thoughtfully and analytically!

  27. 5th Grade Social Studies: Western Hemisphere Social Studies is linked to literacy skills in the Common Core The topics we will cover include: • Geography of The United States , Canada, and Latin America • Exploration of 13 Original Colonies • Western Expansion- The Oregon Trail, Manifest Destiny Debate

Homework • Homework reinforces what is being taught in the classroom. • Greater workload in preparation for middle school and high school • Students will most likely have homework in each subject every night • All students may not have the same assignments • Reinforcement • Reteaching • Challenge/extension assignments

  29. Missing Assignments Missing assignments will require • No homework form • Parent, student signature • Plan to complete the assignment by next day • 20 point penalty
