Humanities – Book Projects • 1st - Historical Fiction  Oct. - Nov. • 2nd – Newbery Books  April – May • Detailed information & requirements will be sent home for each project • Books must be preapproved by teacher • Most of work completed at home, student should be able to complete independently

7. Social Studies • Colonial America • Native Americans, settlements, slavery • Revolutionary War • Events leading to revolution, Patriots, Loyalists, Declaration of Independence • Government • Branches of government, Constitution, Bill of Rights

9. Unit 1: Addition and Subtraction of Fractions (August/September - 15 Days) • Students apply their understanding of fractions and fraction models to represent the addition and subtraction of fractions with unlike denominators as equivalent calculations with like denominators. • They develop fluency in calculating sums and differences of fractions, and make reasonable estimates of them. • Common Core Standards:5.NF.1 and 5.NF.2

Environmental Unit- “Unless” (organisms, renewable & non-renewable resources, native plants vs. alien plants, recycling etc…) Through activities and resources in this unit, students will examine the dynamic nature of living things, their interactions with the environment, and the results from the interactions that occur over time. Through an Environmental issue investigation, students will be asked to take action to positively impact their school grounds. Our Changing Earth (rocks & minerals, fossils, weathering & erosion, etc…) Through activities and resources in this unit, the students will examine the geological features of the earth and how they are changed over time. Earth and Space (phases of the moon, stars, planets, gravity, shadows, sun, etc…) Through activities and resources in this unit, the students will examine the components of the universe and identify the properties that make it possible for the survival of life. Science

Bring Your Own Device • School staff not responsible for the loss, damage, theft, or charging of personally owned devices • Student’s responsibility • Use to enhance learning as directed by teacher • Disciplinary action for violations such as recording videos, accessing unacceptable websites, etc. • Students will use the CCPS wireless network

14. Social Media • Please monitor your child’s use • Problems carry over to school • Causes many distractions • Facebook, Instagram, Ask.fm, Face Time, texting, etc. frequently results in cyberbullying

17. Communicating Student Achievement • Grading • “Effective communication enhances teacher-learning process. Issuing interim and • report cards are an effective way to communicate a measure of student achievement • of objectives, provide feedback and guidance regarding student learning. Interim and • report card grades are to be as pure a measure as possible of student achievement in • mastering content standards.” ~CCPS Board Policy • Data Binders • Sent home every other Tuesday • Please review work with child and initial grade chart. • Data binders will also come home with interims & report cards. • If assignment is written in data binder but no grade is given, then this is a missing assignment that your child must complete.

Second Chance Learning • If your child scores a 69% or below on any graded assignment, he/she can make corrections to the assignment and resubmit the assignment for an improved grade. • Students will earn half credit for each correction • Student initiated responsibility • Resubmit within 2 weeks

Homework • Reading • Reading 20 minutes per night • “Rockin’ Reader” Responses – due on Fridays • Book Projects – 2 per year • May need to finish reading group work • Writing • Occasional grammar practice • May need to finish writing piece • Word Study • Mon. - Thurs. – assignments explained in front of Word Study notebook • Social Studies - May need to finish classwork • Math • Mon. - Thurs • Science – May need to finish classwork

20. River Valley Ranch Lafarge Quarry (spring) East Middle School Visit Chaperones must have been through volunteer training to attend any trip. Volunteer trainings are available throughout the county. Field Trips
