  2. So, what were the Palmer Raids? • Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer was rounding up suspected communists • About 6000 people in all were taken • Used by conservative businessmen to attack labor unions

  3. Why did this happen? • Caused by general dislike of anything related to foreign ideals (esp. those deemed “radical” (like surfing) • Intense fear of Russia after the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917 • American communist party • Labor tensions… • People are blaming everything on the Bolsheviks • General Strike in Seattle in 1919 led to the mayor calling federal troops against the “tyranny of Russia” • Evangelist “Billy” Sunday said Bolsheviks were “grotesque beings”

  4. Election of 1920 • Honoring precedent, Wilson does not run • James H. Cox nominated by Dems • Governor of Ohio • FDR was his running mate! (assistant secretary of the Navy) • But he was up against…

  5. Warren G. Harding • Republican nominee, amiable character • His running mate was Calvin Coolidge from MA • He wins it by a landslide, 16 mil to 9 mil • He promises a “return to normalcy” • Also, Eugene V. Debs ran again from prison and had nearly a million votes! • At this point, there is no hope for America entering the League of Nations • End of the Progressive Era
