  2. Alexander Mitchell Palmer 1872-1936 • Supporter of the Democratic Party. • Worked in the House of Representatives with Woodrow Wilson • Appointed attorney general in 1919

President Wilson focused on WW1 peace treaty so problems fell to Palmer, the Attorney General. • Wilson warned "hyphenated Americans [who] have poured the poison of disloyalty into the very arteries of our national life. Such creatures of passion, disloyalty and anarchy must be crushed out." • With this power, he created the GID ( General Intelligence Division) • Targeted socialists and people with radical beliefs.

International Workers of the World (IWW) • Founded in 1905 • Radical organization also known as the Wobblies • Believed hat there needed to be changes to American capitalism in order to improve oppressive conditions that workers faced. • They were against the war • Avoided draft • Took money from German agents • Held strikes

The Raids. • November 7th 1919. • Anniversary of Russian Revolution • 10,000 suspected communists were arrested. • 247 deported to Russian • Many held without trial • January 1920 • 6,000 arrested • Held without trial • Many were members of the Industrial Workers of the world • Palmer announced that there would be a revolt on May 1st, 1920 • This caused mass panic. • Five socialists were expelled from the legislature in New York.
