  2. 1. Goodbye, Mao! • Mao died in 1976; by 1981, Deng Xiaoping had taken control of China. • His leadership brought more economic freedom, but little political change.

  3. 2. The Four Modernizations • This emphasized farming, industry, science, and defense. • Farming –peasant families were allotted farms and could sell some crops, but the gov’t took a share, too.

  4. Industry – Chinese were allowed to set up their own businesses, run by managers who were given more freedom; foreign capital and technology were welcome.

  5. 3. Results of Modernization • Reform brought a better standard of living – Chinese were buying TVs, fridges, and motor scooters!

  6. But corruption and crime grew, too – inequalities increased as a wealthy class emerged.

  7. By the late 1980s, some Chinese were demanding greater political freedom – the fall of Communism in Europe was beginning to affect China.

  8. 4. Tiananmen Square Massacre • In May 1989, there were demonstrators in Beijing, demanding more rights and freedom.

  9. When they refused to disperse, the gov’t sent in troops and tanks.

  10. Thousands were killed, wounded, or arrested.

  11. This crackdown showed that communism in China would not change.
