Anatomical Terminology. Directional Terms. Used by medical personnel and anatomists allowing them to explain exactly where on body structure is in relation to another. We would say : The ears are located on each side of the head to the right and left of the nose.

Directional Terms • Used by medical personnel and anatomists allowing them to explain exactly where on body structure is in relation to another. • We would say: The ears are located on each side of the head to the right and left of the nose. • Using anatomical terminology: The ears are lateral to the nose.

  5. Body Planes & Sections • When preparing to look at internal structures of the body, medical students make a section or a cut. When the section is made through the body wall or an organ, it is made along an imaginary line called a plane.
