  3. Generation Y (WHY?) • These are the Americans who. . . • Have no recollection of the Reagan era. • Never experienced gasoline shortages. • Don't need to be reminded the world is unsafe.

  4. “Y” Have never known a world without… • cellular phones, video games,cable TV, laptops, mp3s,Jerry Springer, Howard Stern, Rap Music, & Airbags • ATM's, MTV, DVD's, CD's, & CNN • AIDS, Crack, Terrorist Attacks, Kids Killing Kids

  5. “Y” Do not remember… • Mork, Manilow, or Milli Vanilli • ET, Mr. T, or McDLT's • Jordache, Jaws, "Who Shot J.R?" PacMan, Moped's, and 10 Speed Bikes • Traditional 'Leave it to Beaver' Families

  6. “Y” Influences • Media • The Internet • Violent Video Games • New Breed of Heroes (sometimes even criminals) • Judicial System

  7. Juvenile Crime • Juvenile offenders are involved in an estimated 1,300 murders in the U.S. 8% of all murders. • On average, juveniles are involved in 25% of serious violent crimes • 14% of sexual assaults • 30% of robberies • 27% of aggravated assaults.

  8. “Y” Success & Money • Use to Instant Everything • Believe they can Separate Effort from Reward • The END Justifies the MEANS • Feel Entitled - "U O Me!"

  9. “Y” Values • Give Respect only after they are Given Respect • "Fear of Boredom" is greater than "Fear of Injury." • Violence is an Acceptable Option • Self Expression over Self Control

  10. “Y” Have the Abilities to… • ADAPT rapidly • INNOVATE constantly • ACCEPT OTHERS easily • REBOUND quickly and • Are astoundingly LOYAL and COMMITTED if you believe in them. • Volunteer more than any generation in American history!

  20. Middle Adolescence(Senior High Ministry) • The importance of friendships • Family still matters, but in a different way • Huge swings in commitment levels are normal • The need for immediate perceived relevance in all aspects of the program • Every kid needs an older friend/mentor

  21. Late Adolescence(College and Young Adult Ministry) • They're still adolescents! • They need a gentle shove into adulthood

Sexual Risk Behaviors • In 2007, 48% of high school students had ever had sexual intercourse • 15% had four or more sex partners during their life. • In 2007, 39% of currently sexually active high school students did not use a condom during last sexual intercourse. • In 2002, 55% of males and 54% of females aged 15-19 had engaged in oral sex with someone of the opposite sex. Sexual Risk Behaviors • In 2002, 11% of males and females aged 15-19 had engaged in anal sex with someone of the opposite sex • 3% of males aged 15-19 had had anal sex with a male. • In 2006 - 5,259 young people aged 13-24 in the 33 states reporting to CDC were diagnosed with HIV/AIDS, representing about 14% of the persons diagnosed that year. Sexual Risk Behaviors • Each year, there are 19 million new STD infections, and almost half of them are among youth aged 15 to 24 • In 2002, 12% of all pregnancies, or 757,000, occurred among adolescents aged 15-19. • In 2007, 23% of high school students who had sexual intercourse during the past three months drank alcohol or used drugs before their last sexual intercourse. Social Capital • “Is there someone out there that wants to help me without their own agenda?” • Kids need more skills to be an adult today and have less social capital in their lives. • Kids benefit most when 5 adults (or more) invest social capital into their lives. Parents, church, school, etc.
