  4. OBJECTIVES OF SURVEY • To determine tobacco use prevalence among health professionals working in the public health sector of Mauritius • To explore their KABP with respect to tobacco use and smoking cessation • To assess their skills and training needs in smoking cessation techniques.

METHODOLOGY(1) • National cross-sectional survey of Mauritian HPs working in the public service • Target population: • Health professionals working in the public sector of Mauritius. • Stratified random sampling was used • Strata: various categories of health professionals • Medical Officers (doctors) • Specialist Doctors • Dental Officers (dentists) • Qualified Nurses/Midwives. • Sample size of 370 targeted

  6. METHODOLOGY(2) • Ethical approval from MoHQL • Data collection: • Adapted Global Health Professionals Students Survey Questionnaire • self-administered • 15 minutes for completion. • Data entry and statistical analysis: SPSS

  10. 75.0% of smokers report having less than 21 years when they tried their first cigarette • 55.6% of smokers report they are daily smokers • Among the HPs who smoke, 77.8% admit having smoked cigarettes on work premises during the past 6 months • There are no smokers among the five dentists who were surveyed

  16. DISCUSSION • Presentation of results • Training needs of health professionals with respect to smoking cessation approaches. • Results of this Mauritian survey • Findings in countries which carried out the GHPSS. • Three major recommendations are put forward.

RECOMMENDATION • Health professionals need to be trained for improved practice with respect to smoking cessation approaches. • Lack of training of health professionals • Main barrier to the implementation of effective services • Regular workshops • Experts in the field of smoking cessation • Critical mass of empowered health professionals

RECOMMENDATION • Health professionals who smoke need to be given the necessary support to quit smoking successfully. • Reduction of tobacco use among health professionals • One of the goals of tobacco control efforts in Mauritius • Role models in society • Key stakeholders in smoking cessation

RECOMMENDATION • Strategies for effective smoking cessation services need to be enhanced. • WHO/MOH&QL smoking cessation programme • Implementation and extension on a national basis • Media communication and marketing . • Successful smoking cessation services • Decrease in the prevalence of smokers • Reduction in tobacco-related morbidity • Contribution to a healthier Mauritius.
