  1. 4 TYPES OF CHEMICALREACTIONS

  2. 4 TYPES OF CHEMICAL REACTIONS • Synthesis Reaction • Decomposition Reaction • Single Displacement Reaction • Double Displacement Reaction

  3. SYNTHESIS REACTION = is onein which a single product is produced from two or more reactants.X + Y  XY Examples:H2 + Cl2  2HCl S + O2  SO2 SO3 + H2O  H2SO4 2NO + O2  2NO2

  4. DECOMPOSITION REACTION = is one in which a single reactant is converted into two or more simpler substances. XY  X + Y Examples:2CuO  2Cu + O2 2H2O  2H2 + O2 CaCO3  CaO + CO2

  5. SINGLE REPLACEMENT REACTION = is one in which one element of a compound is replaced by another element.X + YZ  Y + XZExamples: Zn + H2SO4 H2 + ZnSO4 Ni + 2HCl  H2 + NiCl2 Mg + Ni(NO3)2 Ni + Mg(NO3)2

  6. DOUBLE REPLACEMENT REACTIONS = is one in which two compounds exchange parts with each other to form two different compounds. AX + BY AY + BX Examples:NaOH + HCl  NaCl + HOH AgNO3 + NaCl  NaNO3 + AgCl NaF + HCl NaCl + HF

  7. A + B → AB Two or more elements or compounds combine to make a more complex substance AB → A + B Compounds break down into simpler substances Occurs when one element replaces another one in a compound AB + C → AC + B AB + CD → AC + BD Occurs when different atoms in two different compounds trade places A = Red B = Blue C = Green D = Yellow

  8. Identifying Chemical Reactions Use colored pencils to circle the common atoms or compounds in each equation to help you determine the type of reaction it illustrates. Use the code below to classify each reaction. S = Synthesis D = Decomposition SR = Single Replacement DR = Double Replacement ____ P + O2 → P4O10 ____ Mg + O2 → MgO ____ HgO → Hg + O2 ____ Al2O3 → Al + O2 ____ Cl2 + NaBr → NaCl + Br2 ____ H2 + N2 → NH3

  9. ____ Na + Br2 → NaBr ____ CuCl2 + H2S → CuS + HCl ____ HgO + Cl2 → HgCl + O2 ____ C + H2 → CH4 ____ KClO3  →   KCl  +  O2  ____ S8 + F2 → SF6 ____ BaCl2   +   Na2 SO4 →     NaCl   +   BaSO4
