Types of Chemical Reactions. Synthesis Reaction- when 2 or more substances combine to form a new substance. Ex: Na + Cl → NaCl Mg + O → MgO. Decomposition Reaction- when 1 substance breaks down into 2 or more simpler substances. Ex: NaCl → Na + Cl MgO → Mg + O.

3.Single-replacement Reaction-when 1 element replaces another in a compound. Na+1Cl-1 + K+1→ K+1Cl-1 + Na+1 Compound Element Compound Element
4. Double-Replacement Reaction- when the positive ions of the compounds switch with each other to make 2 new compounds. Na+1Cl-1 +Li+1F-1 →Li+1Cl-1 +Na+1F-1
Exothermic Reaction- a reaction where some form of energy (in the form of heat) is given off by the reaction. -There is an increase in temperature.
Endothermic Reaction- a reaction where energy must be provided for the reaction to take place. -There is an decrease in temperature.
