  4. Green College? • Current status – Category C (51-75) • Main Building scored 61 • Newcourt scored 58 • Typical College 100 • Target by 2010 – Category B (26-50) • New Build – Category A (0-25) • BREEAM (Energy Efficient Design) Excellent • Architects advised

  5. New Build • Maximises potential of available resources: • Use of Ground Source Water for heating and cooling • Use of Termodeck roof planks for movement of Hot/Cold air • Use of IT controlled Building Management Systems (BMS) • Increased control over current systems in place

Green IT – Current Position • 2007 – Carbon Trust assessment of buildings • Suggestions mainly IT based • College ‘Green Group’ established • Environmental policy in place, reviewed and updated. • 2008 – £150k Salix Grant received • Used to fund first year lease of desktop computers • Benefit: Lower power consumption • Benefit: Single image required • Increased ratio of Laptops to Desktops • Benefit: Laptops turned off when not in use unlike desktops which hibernate

Green IT – Current Position • Use of Software applications to turn off Desktop computers. • Deepfreeze: • Turns off desktops at preset time (7 p.m.) • PC’s next turned on when required • Lanschool • Allows Teacher to turn off all desktops in a single room from a central location • Lightspeed • Allows Technicians to turn off all desktops in part or all of the College from a central location.

Green IT – Current Position • Server Virtualisation: • Current Position: 33 Traditional Servers • Average CPU Performance 4% • Peak CPU Performance 8% • Future Position: 3 to 5 Blade Servers • Issues to consider: (Move to a single Server Room) • Opportunity for centralisation of resources • Reduced need for distributed Air Conditioning • Reduced energy consumption • Less hardware

  9. Green IT – Current Position • Consideration for WEEE regulations: • Lease v Purchase • Return to Base v Arrange for Recycling • Strategy for recycling of old stock • Use of recycling company • Donation of equipment to overseas school • Long term loan to staff for home use

  10. Green IT - Printing • At present all printers are purchased • Must conform to HSFC requirements • Must be capable of double-sided printing (default) • Sleep mode • Toner efficient • Planned move to Multi Function Devices • Reduced number of devices • ‘Follow me’ printing • ‘Print release’

Green IT - Printing • Adopted ways of working which don’t require hard copy • Moodle (Teaching and Learning) • Sharepoint (College Administration) • Parentmail (Reduced printing and postage) • Email (College Bulletin) • Paper format • Change to standard format allows for extra print area • Must consider requirements of DDA • Paper recycling policy
