  1. The Legend of Nian Authors: Sammy Steward and Chae Lee

  2. Legend says that there once lived an enormous, ferocious, single-horned beast called Nian. He was born with sharp teeth and a long powerful tail.

  3. Nian spent almost all of the year deep in the ocean. When the lunar year end, it came out to the village and destroyed all of the crops, and swallowed almost all of the living things including humans. People who survived were so terrified that they ran away to mountains to get away from Nian.

  4. It was the last day of one year, when an old man walked into a village. All of the people were really busy getting ready for their escape that no one paid attention to the elderly man. The old man walked slowly along the street, looked around in satisfaction and showed no intention of escaping from Nian.

  5. A kind granny saw the man and tried to persuade him to flee with her. But the man insisted he would stay and asked the granny if he could use her house for shelter. He persuaded, “If you let me stay, I can assure you that Nian the beast will never come again.” The granny wanted to refuse, but she gave him permission and left with the other villagers.

  6. Nian, the beast ran into the village after midnight. But he found something was strange. Red paper was pasted on the gate of the granny’s house and the room was lit with candlelight making it as bright as day. Glaring at granny's house, Nian ran toward it with great anger. But when he almost got to the door, the cracking sound of firecrackers came from the house.

  7. Nian trembled all over in great fear when it heard the sound. The beast was definitely fierce and cruel but it was terribly afraid of the color red, candlelight, and the sound of firecrackers. At this time, the old man was wearing red clothes head to toe and came out of the home laughing fearlessly at the beast. Turning pale with fear, Nian fled in in confusion.

  8. The next day scared villagers came back to their houses and to everyone’s surprise, the elderly man was still living! After knowing the secret of the beast, villagers began wearing new clothes(red clothes) and sending regards to friend and family to congratulate them from surviving the beast.

  9. That is how the traditions of the Chinese New Year became!
