  1. The story of Nian BY Tim Pierce

  2. It said that in ancient times in China, there was a ferocious, violent, ugly, single horned beast, with sharp teeth and a long powerful tailed named Nian.

  3. He lived in the deep ocean. But when the lunar year ended, he came out and went into the villages, destroyed crops, and swallowed people. One year the people were so scared they fled to the remote mountains near them.

  4. It was the last day of one year a old man walked into the village. All the other villagers were packing. The old lady met him and tried to convince him to go with her, but she didn’t win. He asked to use her house and she agreed.

  5. The beast ran into town at midnight. The old man past. A red paper to the gate of the granny's house . The beast ran to her house and when he almost got to the door. He saw candlelight and heard firecrackers. He shook with fear. He was a Fierce and cruel beast but he was afraid of candlelight, and firecrackers.

  6. When the villagers came back they and learned of the beast secret. They put red paper on their gates and door. And set off firecrackers ever year. They called it Chinese New year Day. And the beast never came back again.
