Psychosocial Distress Intervention and Outcomes • What we know: • Cancer patients have distress • Cancer patients are a heterogeneous population in terms of disease and patient characteristics • Some interventions are effective for some cancer patients • Clinical practice guidelines are not frequently implemented • There is an ethical responsibility to address psychosocial distress • What we don’t know: • What interventions are both effective for a wide range of cancer patients and a good use of limited resources

  2. Positive Deviance Identifies those in resource poor situations who are achieving positive outcomes Identifies uncommon/innovative behaviors which may be accessible to other organizations Identifies pathways to success for others in similar resource poor environments

  3. Survey of Providers • 30 structured interviews completed with nurses, social workers, and physicians working within Indiana cancer centers • Analyzing qualitative data • Possible next steps • Investigation of innovative assessment processes • Uniqueness of rural care centers
