Warm up 5/06/13 • Question: Name some simple machines • Answer: • Lever, pulley, wheel & axle, wedge / ramp, gears, screw • Goal: I will learn about simple machines.
Element of the day • 74 – Tungsten – W • Tungsten’s most famous use is in the filament of incandescent light bulbs, which turn only about 10% of the electricity they use into light. The other 90% is wasted as heat. • Tungsten carbide tools are tougher than diamond and harder than steel, and are among the most useful cutting tools. Tungsten carbide can also be used in armor piercing bullets • Tungsten is both very dense and fairly cheap, so it is used for counterweights, fishing sinkers, darts, shot puts, and more. Its density also allows it to shield radiation like lead.
