Understanding Functions Through Superhero Figurine Purchases

Petunia and Opal attended a superhero convention and bought five figurines at five dollars each. The problem involves creating a function to determine the total cost based on the number of figurines purchased. The equation is Y = 5.00X, where X is the number of figurines and Y is the total cost. We analyze the independent variable (X) and the dependent variable (Y), with a defined domain of {1, 2, 3, 4, 5} and corresponding range {5.00, 10.00, 15.00, 20.00, 25.00}. This example illustrates a discrete function, as figurines are only bought in whole numbers.

  1. . Function project. Anne grimes.

  2. Real world problem. (: • Petunia and Opal went to a superhero convention and they purchased five superhero figurines for five dollars each.

  3. The equation. • The equation to my problem is; Y = 5.00 or F(x)= 5.00x X= the number of superhero figurines. Y= the total cost.

  4. independent & dependent. • The independent value is my “x” which is the number of the superhero figurines. • My dependent value is my “y” which is the total cost. • We know that “y” depends on “x”. • So the total cost is the DEPENDS on the number of superhero figurines.

  5. Table of values.

  6. Domain & Range. R A N G E • Domain is the x values. • Range is the y values. • So my domain is {1,2,3,4,5} • & my range is • {5.00,10.00,15.00, 20.00, 25.00 D OMAI

  7. Is it a function? • Yes, IT IS A FUNCTION!

  8. Is it continuous or discrete? • Since my data contains only points and NOT a line, then it is a discrete graph. • You cant purchase one and a half figurines you can only purchase the figurines by 1, 2, 3 and whatnot. So you cant use numbers between 1 & 2.

  9. Graph

  10. & soo.. • Since petunia and opal wanted five superhero figurines petunia and opal spent twenty five dollars instead of five dollars.(:
