  1. Outcome and Impacts Collapse of the Soviet Union

  2. Problems in the Middle East • Since Ayatollah Khomeini took over Iran has maintained an Islamic Republic, with their laws/legal system based on Islamic law. • Relations between the United States and Iran are still very poor, especially since we provided Iraq weapons during the Iran-Iraq war.

  3. Soviet Involvement in Afghanistan • The Soviet involvement with Afghanistan left much of the country destroyed and without a strong government. • American involvement provided the Afghani people with resources while they were fighting the Soviets, but once the Soviets withdrew their forces we pulled our support from the region. • The destruction from the war, and lack of government leadership allowed for extremist/terrorist groups to emerge in the region.

  4. Gorbachev’s Impact • Gorbachev’s changes to Soviet foreign policy, as well as internal changes such as glasnost and perestroika were intended to keep the Soviet Union together, but instead led to it collapsing. • Gorbachev’s reforms exposed people to many of the freedoms they had been lacking under the old leadership.

  5. Yeltsin’s Legacy • Yeltsin came to power during a time of great change; Russia was shifting from communism to capitalism. • Yeltsin tried to use shock therapy to ease the transition, but this just led to more economic problems. • When Yeltsin left office Vladimir Putin took over, and he remains a powerful figure in Russia today.

  6. Russia Today • After communism ended much of Russia’s resources became privatized. • Eventually the economy got back on track, but today Russia faces problems many capitalist countries do, such as large gaps between the rich and the poor. • Russians still have many limitations on their freedoms today.

  7. Impacts on Satellite nations • Many satellite nations began to seek more freedoms when Gorbachev put his reforms into place. • When the Soviet Union collapsed the remaining satellite nations and republics of the Soviet Union declared their independence. • These newly independent nations moved away from communism and had to re-start their economies.

  8. Former Satellite Nations Today • After the fall of the Soviet Union many of the satellite nations went through periods of economic hardships, trying to re-adjust their economies and create new, independent political systems. • The collapse of Yugoslavia led to the creation of new nations and fighting to establish borders and a national identity. Bosnia was one nation that struggled greatly, experiencing a war and a genocide. • Poland remains democratic today, although they did experience many difficulties after the end of communist rule. • Czechoslovakia also split up in the wake of the collapse of the Soviet Union, becoming the Czech Republic, and Slovakia.
