General Considerations • Urgent need to address the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity BNJ • Some progress made since 2006 (e.g. GA resolution and FAO, CBD and ISA work), but further efforts needed • All issues related to oceans are interrelated and should be addressed in an interdisciplinary, intersectoral and comprehensive manner • UNCLOS sets out the legal framework for all activities in the oceans and seas and is complemented by a number of other conventions and instruments • Science has an essential role and further scientific research is needed • There is a need for increased capacity-building for developing States
Co-Chairs’ Concluding Remarks • Need for ongoing consideration by the General Assembly of these issues, in particular within the framework of the Working Group • The Working Group could consider: • More effective implementation and enforcement of existing instruments • Strengthening of cooperation and coordination at all levels and across all sectors, including enhanced cooperation in capacity-building for developing countries
